Cloud Cost Optimization for Growing Businesses: Where to Start

Cloud cost optimization is one of those topics that is easy to defer and expensive to ignore. Teams focus on shipping features, and the AWS bill grows quietly in the background. At some point — usually when a finance review surfaces the number — the bill becomes a priority.

This guide covers where to look first when starting a cost review in an SMB AWS environment.

Understand What You Are Paying For

The first step is not optimisation. It is understanding. Enable AWS Cost Explorer if it is not already active, and look at the last three months of spending by service, by linked account, and by region. Most teams are surprised by at least one significant line item — a service left running, an unexpected data transfer charge, or a workload using more compute than expected.

Cost and Usage Reports provide more granular data. Enable them and feed the data into a tool you can query — Athena, a spreadsheet, or a dedicated cost management platform.

EC2: Right-Sizing and Reserved Capacity

EC2 is typically the largest cost driver in AWS environments. The two main optimisation levers are right-sizing and reserved capacity.

Right-sizing means matching instance type to actual workload requirements. AWS Compute Optimizer analyses CloudWatch metrics and recommends instances that fit the actual CPU, memory, and network usage. Many workloads run on instances that were selected for peak capacity and run at 5 to 15 percent utilisation most of the time.

Reserved Instances and Savings Plans offer up to 72 percent discount compared to on-demand pricing for committed usage over one or three years. For stable workloads that will run for at least 12 months, this is the highest-impact single optimisation action.

Data Transfer Costs

AWS charges for data leaving its network. Data transfer between regions, from AWS to the internet, and in some cases between services within a region can produce significant charges that are easy to miss until they appear on a bill.

Review your data transfer costs. Traffic patterns that route data through multiple services, or applications that make large API responses when smaller ones would work, often drive avoidable transfer charges.

Idle and Forgotten Resources

Development environments, test instances, and proof-of-concept resources get created and forgotten. A regular audit of running resources — EC2 instances, RDS instances, EBS volumes, Elastic IPs, load balancers — typically surfaces meaningful cost reduction opportunities without affecting production workloads.

AWS Trusted Advisor identifies idle resources. For EBS volumes, look for volumes not attached to a running instance. For EC2, look for instances with consistently low CPU utilisation.

Cloudain Perspective

Cloudain offers cloud cost optimisation engagements for SMBs — inventory, right-sizing analysis, savings plan recommendations, and waste elimination. If your AWS bill has grown beyond what you can easily explain, we can help you understand and reduce it.
